Bringing Digital Payments to Microfinance in Darfur

Microfinance institutions are often the only source of credit for small businesses and families in rural areas. But when every loan disbursement and repayment depends on cash, costs rise, records are harder to keep and clients have to travel to pay. Digital payments can change that.

In 2021, working with PACT and UNDP, ACTS integrated microfinance institutions in Darfur with our payment gateway, NOEBS.

What the integration does

NOEBS is our e-payment gateway. It implements most of EBS’s services, with an emphasis on scalability and maintainable code. Connecting microfinance institutions to it means they can use electronic payment services rather than relying only on cash.

Why it matters in Darfur

  • Less cash handling: fewer risks and lower costs for institutions and clients.
  • Better records: electronic transactions are easier to track, reconcile and report.
  • Easier access: clients can make payments without long trips to a branch.
  • A foundation for growth: once institutions are connected, new digital services can be added.

Reaching rural areas

Technology only helps if people can reach it. ACTS operates an agent network in all 18 states of Sudan, with access to and experience in rural areas, ready to provide financial services to customers and beneficiaries.

Part of a wider commitment to financial inclusion

The Darfur integration is one part of our work on financial inclusion. Sandoog, our app for Village Savings and Loan Associations, is used by more than 100 groups in Blue Nile State. We also hold a Payment Service Provider licence from the Central Bank of Sudan, held since 2019.
